UNDERLAYMENTS

FELT PAPER
The use of felt paper as an underlayment for the entire roof deck has great added benefits.  It provides protection against wind driven rains and wind uplifts.  Certain roofs are designed so that this underlayment is not an option, while others are not.  There are various products to choose from, each of which is strongly recommended by the shingle manufacturer.

ICE & WATER SHIELD

The effects of global warming, with respect to the change in weather patterns, is now being recognized and addressed within the construction industry.  As a professional roofing contractor, we strongly recommend the use of ice & water shield 3ft. around the perimeter of the roof at the eaves and under all valleys.  Ice & water shield is the product that provides watertight protection against the back-up of water resulting from ice dams.  Ice dams occur when the temperature changes in the winter from extreme cold days to nice sunny days.  The snow melts and in the evening when it gets cold again it turns to ice and backs up underneath the shingles.  If the weather continues to be like this, the ice keeps getting higher up the roof and under the shingles where it enters between the seams of the plywood causing interior damage.  You know those discoloured rings that appear on your ceilings and the wet insulation in your attic?  That is because the standard felt paper used, if applicable, is not sufficient in preventing the water penetration caused by ice dams in winter.  For the additional cost, we feel it is well worth the extra protection and comfort of knowing that your biggest investment is being covered.  Roof designs with belling, saddles and between tight areas on a roof are a few areas where we automatically install this product.  As well as the savings in having to get the ice removed from areas on the roof would be substantial every year, it infact would probably be more than the initial investment of installing ice and water shield when the roof is being done.  Being knowledgable allows you to make an informed decision.

Flat Roofing Features

There are 4 basic types of application for flatroofs.  Any of these can be installed on any flatroof, however some applications are more ideal for certain designs than others.  Proper slopage and drainage are the key factors in any successful flatroof system.

2 Ply Modified Torchdown: Consists of 2 layers of membrane, thermally fused, creating a high performance modified bitumen roofing and waterproofing system.  A product called Protectoboard is most often installed underneath the first layer of membrane.  It has many benefits in addition to providing a consistent surface for application.  This system is typical for house roofs, decks and balconies. See I.K.O. or SOPREMA

4 Ply Tar & Gravel: Consists of layers of felt paper and hot tar (asphalt), topped with pea gravel.  This system is predominantly used on large commercial roofs. See I.K.O.

EPDM: This is a single ply rubberized membrane.  There are two types of application, loose laid and fully adhered.  This system is also predominantly used on large commercial roofs.See FIRESTONE

Vinyl Decking: This a reinforced PVC membrane, that is waterproof and resistant to mildew and bacteria.  This application eliminates the use of wood decks, is available in many colours and is a finished product.  This system is typical for decks and balconies. See DEC TEC

Cedar Roofing:There is only one application style for cedar roofing, however different products do exist which create different looks.   Deciding on either shakes or shingles, which type of cedar and which grade of cedar will affect the overall appearance, durability and life span of your roof.  There are also treated and untreated products.  It is important to install an underlayment on the entire roof deck when applying cedar.  This underlayment consists of felt paper and cedar breather, and increases the longevity of the roof.

Copper & Metal Roofing: Bay windows, barrel roofs, cupolas and canopies are just a few common areas designed for prepainted metal or copper to be installed.  We have an in house sheet metal shop, with qualified fabricators who cut and bend copper and metal into the custom dimensions required to facilitate any job.

Skylights: We provide two types of skylights, acrylic domed and flat glass units.  There are fixed units that are mounted directly on your roof and curbmounted units that sit on top of a curb.  The slope of your roof is one factor in determining which type of skylight you should choose.  There are also units that open to provide ventilation, heat gain and daylight, as well as tinting and sun screening options that reduce heat, light and fading.
